Souvenir#2, video, 9’40’’
Souvenir #2 displaces the mountain peak of Ano Syros to Syros’ shore.
The work looks at (im)possible unfoldings contained within the notion of misunderstanding in communication. While Joseph Stefanou narrates how he discovered the mountainpeak of Ano Syros, English subtitles render Stefanou’s words. What is at stake is the agency of knowledge between perception, culture and imagination.

*More Light / Μehr Licht (Goethe’s last words), chalk powder
An instant symbolic reactivation and a visualized analysis of the color spectrum emited by the Lighthouse. A tribute to the electromagnetic radiation of light, for its beneficial, therapeutic (figuratively or literally), impact on human civilization.

Cognitive Cartography, installation
Cognitive Cartography is the process of mapping my personal world. Logging my navigational experience in the sea is the activity in which as an individual my need is to distinguish and define myself spatially in relation to a vast and unknowable territory out there. A territory that belongs to those who explore it.

“Fast-track lighthouse for rapid coastal urbanization”,  digital print
The crane-lighthouse, moving on track, follows the rapid geographical transformations along the shores of the developing countries, answering to the immediate need for the construction of a port or its relocation elsewhere. The transferrable “Lighthouse- kit” follows the future development across the line of big international transportation corridors.

Artefacts that would have been taken to Syros (Not Being There)
The light of the scanner beams like a lighthouse over an image of a shelter on a desolate location and a measuring tool which is unable to analyse what hasn’t been reached. These ongoing mementos have a mist of distance between them and the light source, clouded from full perception.

“Rantos at the Lighthouse”, ψηφιακές εκτυπώσεις
The surrealist poet Nikitas Rantos-Nikolas Kallas (“Kalamaris” aka “Squid”) goes to Syros. The myth of the sea monster - squid or octopus- which eats the lighthouse is very common across the naval narrations. The report of the Head of Lighthouses Department Stylianos Emm. Lykoudis confirms the narrations.

“Πελαγοδρομείς”, video loop, 8’’
“Pelagodromeis”, video loop, 8’’
We are in the midst of a grave humanitarian crisis. It is assumed that, so far this year, more than 1,800 migrants were drowned, attempting the journey towards the “lighthouse” of Europe. European governments are more concerned with keeping people out of their fortresses than saving lives.

“ Tools of Dominance”, εγκατάσταση
Στο workshop Luminous flux / Reflected overlays on locative norms, παρουσιάζω φωτογραφίες polaroid  οι οποίες τραβήχτηκαν στη νησίδα Γάιδαρος / Δίδυμη στις 19/7.

The Lighthouse Network is part of a county’s Naval Force and constitutes a vital tool in regards to supervision, control and security of Maritime activity.
For the Luminous flux / Reflected overlays on locative norms workshop, I am presenting a series of polaroid photographs, taken on the Gaidaros / Didimi islet on the 19/7. Additionally, I am apposing relevant imagery of landscape, tools and equipment along with words-notions that imply the antagonistic nature of mankind and the urge for Prevalence and Dominance.

“Manipulating History: Tahrir/Pharos
A shift of symbolism between what was organically defined by a People and what was arbitrarily decided by a regime.”
“Manipulating History: Tahrir/Pharos
A shift of symbolism between what was organically defined by a People and what was arbitrarily decided by a regime.” video installation
The project is a critical view on the rebuilding of the Alexandria Lighthouse, an architectural project that -in the aftermath of a revolution- can be seen as an Historicist effort to define cultural identity while legitimizing a nationalistic, military regime as the inheritor of a historical continuity . A Pharos that creates a clear path within the infinite grid of history becomes a powerful symbol of arbitrary justification.
